Top seniors from 23 career-technical programs at the Wayne County Schools Career Center were honored at the Wooster Area Chamber of Commerce Senior Recognition Day Breakfast held at the Wooster Country Club.
WCSCC Superintendent Kip Crain welcomed the students and their mentors. He thanked Chamber President Justin Starlin for his support of Career Center students stating, “We truly value your partnership.” He also recognized Career Center staff for “instructing, coaching, and guiding our students over the past two years,” and commended the students for their perseverance, leadership, and for being outstanding role models for other students.
Starlin discussed the strength of the economy and the diversity of job opportunities in Wayne County. He summarized his own career path and stressed the importance of the connections and relationships students make in the workplace, telling students to, “Build your network and reputation. Take advantage of every interaction and always greet people with a smile.”
Guest speaker Dr. Anthony Tizzano of the Cleveland Clinic spoke about the importance of mentorship. He shared his thoughts to help guide the students as they begin the next chapter of their lives saying, “You’ve already taken that first step; you have a mentor. The thing you are looking for is wisdom. The thing mentors have to offer is wisdom.”
Tizzano stressed the importance of making a good first impression and advocating for yourself saying, “You see a door open and you stick your foot in it. Don’t be the wallflower, never be the wallflower.”
