Wayne County Schools Career Center student Dominic Ferrell welcomes guests to the BPA Region 8 Awards.Nine Wayne County Schools Career Center students have qualified for state Business Professionals of America (BPA) competition on March 10 and 11 in Columbus after placing first at regional contests. Those winning the state competition will go to BPA national competition in Dallas, Texas on May 4-8.

            Placing first in podcast production team were Interactive Media students Brooklyn Bucher of Orrville, Kiesha Hasskew of Triway, and Sarah Koontz, homeschooled.

            Placing first in prepared speech was Caydi Figel, a homeschooled Interactive Media student. Placing first in Extemporaneous speech was Izaak Phillips, a Business student from Dalton. Placing first in fundamental spreadsheet applications was Kayla Ling, a Business student from Wooster.

            Also moving on to State in business law & ethics are first place winner Andrea Maibach of Norwayne and third place winner Autumn Duncan of Northwestern, both in the Business program.

            Bucher also competed in a virtual promotional photography competition. Out of 569 entries, she is currently in the top 20. She will have a virtual interview to discuss her project. A top ten finish will earn her an invitation to the National Showcase in Dallas, Texas.

            The Region 8 workplace skills assessment awards ceremony was held at Grace Church in Wooster, with the theme “Go Beyond Your Limits.” Region 8 also includes students from Buckeye Career Center, BCC East Business Academy, Canton South High School, Garaway High School in Sugarcreek, Perry High School, and Washington High School in Massillon. The top six place winners in each category received a certificate and plaque.

            As part of the Region 8 leadership team, Figel helped lead the opening ceremony along with fellow officers, Dominic Ferrell, Seth Bowers, and Rylan Durieux. Ferrell welcomed Ohio BPA Advisor Crystal Dortch and guests while Figel led the Pledge of Allegiance. Figel and Ferrell are also campaigning at the State Leadership Conference for state officer positions.

            Career Center instructors of programs participating in BPA are Kelly Miller and Julie Keener, Business; Jennifer Rue, Interactive Media; and Kayla Carraway, Graphic Design & Photography.
